Look for God for a relationship not only for blessings, solutions and relief

Many people turn to God when they face challenges, seeking blessings, solutions, or relief from their problems. While these are natural and important reasons to seek God, there is a deeper, more fulfilling purpose in building a relationship with Him. Jesus invites us to look beyond temporary needs and hunger for a lasting connection that brings peace, security, love, and a new identity. This post explores why seeking God for a relationship matters more than just seeking what He can give.

The Hunger for More Than Physical Bread

In John 6:35, Jesus declares, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” This statement points to a spiritual hunger that goes beyond physical needs. When Jesus fed the five thousand with loaves and fish, many people followed Him, hoping for more food. But Jesus challenged them in John 6:26, asking, “You are looking for me, not because you saw the signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.”

This moment reveals a common human tendency: to seek God only for what He can provide. The crowd wanted more bread, but Jesus wanted them to seek Him for who He is. The physical bread satisfied hunger temporarily, but only Jesus, the bread of life, can satisfy the soul forever.

Building a Spiritual Relationship with God

  • A relationship with God is not about transactions or quick fixes. It is about connecting with Him on a spiritual level that transforms your heart and mind. This relationship offers:

    • Peace that calms anxiety and fear, even in difficult times.

    • Security that comes from knowing God’s presence is constant and unchanging.

    • Love that fills the emptiness and heals wounds.

    • A new identity as a child of God, valued and accepted.

    • Rest from striving and self-reliance, finding true refreshment in Him.

When you seek God for a relationship, you move beyond temporary relief and enter into a life-changing connection. This relationship shapes how you see yourself, others, and the world.

Why Relationship Matters More Than Blessings

Seeking God only for blessings or solutions can lead to disappointment. Blessings may come and go, and problems may persist. But a relationship with God provides a foundation that remains steady through life’s ups and downs. Here’s why:

  • Blessings are gifts, but relationship is the giver. When you focus on blessings, you risk idolizing what you receive rather than who gives it.

  • Solutions address symptoms, but relationship heals the root. God’s presence changes your heart, enabling you to face challenges with hope and strength.

  • Relief is temporary, but relationship is eternal. The peace and rest found in God last beyond any circumstance.

Jesus’ invitation in John 6 calls us to hunger for Him, not just what He can do for us.

Practical Ways to Build Your Relationship with God

Building a relationship with God takes intentional effort. Here are some practical steps:

  • Spend time in prayer not just asking for things, but listening and sharing your heart.

  • Read and meditate on Scripture to know God’s character and promises.

  • Worship regularly to express love and gratitude.

  • Practice obedience by living out God’s teachings in daily life.

These habits help deepen your connection and reveal more of God’s presence in your life.

The Rest Jesus Offers

Jesus promises rest to those who come to Him (Matthew 11:28-30). This rest is not just physical but spiritual—a deep calm and assurance that comes from trusting God. When you seek God for a relationship, you find this rest. It frees you from the constant worry about your needs and allows you to live with confidence in God’s care.
